Color Crushed
What color should I paint my living room?
I have 3 old gold crushed velvet couches, and funky pillows. The fireplace is light blue and has wood floors. The crown molding and trim are this horrible orange color, and the walls white. I also have a large brown shagged rug. I would prefer funky, because the art work in there is all funky as well. Please help me in this color crisis.
You have 2 options: Since gold is in the yellow family, you could go with a very light purple (yes, purple!) since purple is opposite yellow on the color wheel. To tie the look together, try & find purple & gold striped fabric to make your own toss pillows or buy them ready-made. For the fireplace, I would repaint the light blue to a shimmery gold which will sparkle more when the fireplace is lit and complement the couches. Your 2nd option (and the one I prefer) is to paint the walls a silvery-grey and use a metallic silver paint for the fireplace. Add a bit more gold in accessories & try & find things with silver AND gold in them like bowls, candles, or funky lamp shades. Since brown is neutral, the rug should coordinate well with the silver & gold theme. You could easily find funky accents in gold & silver & brown using candle-scapes. Mixing metallics with nature (think brown twigs) will give it a contemporary, fresh modern feel without being too zany. Whatever paint color you chose, I strongly recommend Benjamin Moore paint. It costs a bit more than Behr & Glidden & Valspar but it is a much better qualty paint. Hope this helps. Good luck.
