The construction of todays headlight varies in shape and construction.

No longer flat or convex as a rule, the new shapes are designed to complement the shape of the individual vehicle it is attached to.

While this increases their beauty it also escalates their cost.

Naturally occurring oxidation will form over the lens and cause clouding.

Without a system in place to combat this problem your headlights will go from clear to cloudy to opaque.

A perfectly working headlight can be rendered useless by oxidation, but oxidation can be removed instantly with an acrylic lens deoxidizer.

The problem is there are so many products on the market to address the problem of oxidation that rely solely on abrasives like sandpaper and rubbing compound.

These things will destroy the surface of a modern acrylic headlight lens.

Abrasives are designed to remove scratches by hiding the scratch with more scratches. This archaic method is unacceptable for todays acrylic headlight lens.

Some headlights have a thin protective costing over them to protect them from the yellowing effects of the suns Ultra Violet rays.

Some have this protection built in.

This surface will oxidize but it can be restored to clarity instantly with an acrylic lens deoxidizer. It can also be prevented from oxidizing with the use of an acrylic conditioner (APC).

Some say call the worn surface “bad plastic and say it has to be removed”. This is a mistake. Scratches and pits from normal driving do not block light projection. They are not the problem, Oxidation is the problem and it can coat the surface within a year.

However if this protective surface is removed or destroyed while removing the oxidation with abrasives, it will cloud, yellow and oxidize again and this time, while the oxidation can still be removed there is no recovery from the yellowing caused by the absence of UV protection. Your lens will have to be replaced.

Even when the UV protection is built in, abrasives can damage the surface of the lens beyond repair by clouding it with scratches.

Sure is some cases a headlight cleaned with an abrasive or sandpaper kit will look better for a short time, but the damage will eventually show through.

Sealers sold with these kits are designed to covet the visible damage that you cannot hide with sanding and polishing.

Generally these kits have no UV protection, apply thickly and will yellow and crack on your headlight leaving it in even worse condition.

Even a damaged UV layer is better than no UV layer and far superior to the aftermarket sealers sold with these damaging abrasive headlight sanding kits.
